Fitting a Riding Helmet for Safety (brought to us by thehorsemart@earthlink.net, The Horse Mart Tack Shop)

It's important for a helmet to stay firmly on your head and not wiggle around as you ride. It should fit snugly enough that it will slightly lift your eyebrows and the skin around your crown as you lift it from your head with an even tightness all around -- not tight at your forehead and loose at your ears. It should be level over your eyebrows from front to back and not allowed to tilt back. The proper harness adjustment will be snug under the chin, and flat both in front of and behind the ears. Try the "hat test": with the harness closed, snap your head front to back, then side to side. If the helmet can move back on your head or in front of your eyes, it's too loose. Sometimes adding a foam insert will work to tighten the helmet, or try the next size down. Troxel helmets are all lightweight and simple to adjust, and the Lidlocker from Lexington has a unique harness system that tightens around the base of the skull to help hold the helmet firmly in place.
